Reckon on 411 km in mixed Belgian use, and 233 km on the E411 motorway at 120 km/h and 0 °C if you respect the recommended charging window. The gap with the homologated 534 km is no scandal: it comes from speed, from cold, and from one figure Tesla leaves in the dark.

411 km, and that figure does not come from Tesla

One point genuinely grates, and it is not the one you would expect.

Real-world range means the distance a car covers in the conditions you actually drive in, as opposed to the distance homologated on a test bench under the WLTP procedure. On the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, homologation gives 534 km. The figure we keep for Belgium is 411 km, obtained by applying the 0.77 coefficient used across this site, a coefficient calibrated on motorway and winter measurements.

So far, nothing unusual: every manufacturer posts an optimistic WLTP number, and every site applies a discount. The problem lies elsewhere.

Turning a range into a real-world range requires a battery capacity. Dividing kilowatt-hours by a consumption figure is the whole operation. Except that Tesla does not publish the net capacity of its batteries, neither on the Belgian Model Y page, nor in the configurator, nor in the technical sheet handed to the customer. The 69.9 kWh we use is a reconstruction: 534 km multiplied by 13.1 kWh/100 km of homologated consumption. We already set it out in our electric SUV ranking, and it remains what it is, a deduction.

Why does Tesla not publish its battery capacity?

The brand defends a results-based logic: what matters to the driver is the distance covered, not the size of the tank. Commercially, the argument holds. It becomes a nuisance as soon as you want to compare, work out a cost per kilometre, or estimate a charge on a charger billed by the kWh.

Three figures are missing from the Belgian Model Y configurator, and each one costs you at comparison time:

  • Net battery capacity. Every other brand in the segment gives it, gross or net. Škoda and BYD quote gross, Volkswagen and Hyundai quote net, Tesla quotes nothing.
  • The 10 to 80 % DC charging time. The 31 minutes on our model sheet come from an independent measurement published by EVKX, not from the manufacturer, and correspond to an average of 82 kW across the session.
  • Sustained charging power. The peak is quoted at 175 kW, which places the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive well below the 250 kW of a Model 3 Long Range and below the 233 kW of a Hyundai Ioniq 5 on its 800-volt architecture.

A Belgian buyer weighing up three SUVs therefore lacks, for one of the three, the data the other two hand over unprompted.

How much is left at 120 km/h on the E411?

Between 233 and 280 km, depending on temperature, and the table below shows where the gap comes from.

Two clarifications before reading it, because they govern everything. The consumption column mixes one homologation value with calculation assumptions calibrated on the known behaviour of a 1,921 kg SUV: these are not measurements we took ourselves on this car. The second range column starts from 69.9 kWh, meaning a battery run from 100 to 0 %, which never happens. The third starts from 55.9 kWh, the 10 to 90 % window Tesla recommends for everyday use on NMC batteries.

The last column is the one that counts, and it is precisely the one nobody displays. Between a battery filled to the brim and the window the manufacturer itself advises, there is 20 % of capacity, therefore 20 % of range, and the gap with the brochure figure widens from 23 % to 56 % on the winter line.

A word on that winter line, because it always surprises people. The 24.0 kWh/100 km does not come from one phenomenon but from four that stack up: cold air is denser and creates more drag, tyre rubber stiffens, cabin heating draws continuously on the traction battery since there is no combustion engine supplying free waste heat, and preconditioning before a rapid charge consumes energy of its own. None of those four items shows up on the centre screen. All of them are paid for in the same place.

Can the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive do Brussels to Arlon and back without charging?

No. And one way, yes, in every season.

Brussels to Arlon on the E411 is roughly 190 km, almost entirely at 120 km/h. Even on the least favourable line of the table, a Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive leaving at 90 % arrives with margin to spare: 211 km available for 190 to cover. In mild weather the margin becomes comfortable.

The return trip is 380 km. No line of the table covers it inside the 10 to 90 % window, not even mixed use at 329 km, and not even the 15 °C town line at 386 km, because a run to the Ardennes is not an urban run. The conclusion is simple, and it holds in August too: you charge once, somewhere between Wavre and Neufchâteau, or you charge at your parents' house on arrival.

This is not a Model Y flaw. It is the reality of any 70 kWh electric SUV on a 380 km motorway round trip, and it is exactly the sum you do in your head on a Friday evening, boot loaded, before setting off.

The counter-argument holds: this SUV uses less than its rivals

Credit where it is due.

Across the seven electric SUVs in our ranking of 6 September, the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive posts the best in-use consumption of the lot, 17.0 kWh/100 km, ahead of the Kia EV3 at 17.5 and far ahead of the BYD Seal U at 22.7. For 1,921 kg and 4.79 m, that is aerodynamics, not catalogue copy.

The criticism therefore does not target the car. It targets a brand withholding the two figures that would prove it right.

A €143 yearly gap between Flanders and Wallonia

At 17.0 kWh/100 km, 15,000 km a year consumes 2,550 kWh. Applied to the all-inclusive price ceilings published by the CREG, the Belgian federal energy regulator, for the third quarter of 2026, that gives €822 in Flanders at 32.22 c€/kWh, €910 in Brussels at 35.68 c€/kWh, and €965 in Wallonia at 37.83 c€/kWh. Home charging only, peak and off-peak hours combined.

Usage weighs far more than the postcode. The same Wallonian driver covering those 15,000 km at 24.0 kWh/100 km on winter motorways would reach €1,362, which is €397 more than the same driver in mixed use. Against €143 between Flanders and Wallonia on identical usage.

Put plainly: moving house changes almost nothing, easing off the accelerator changes a lot.

Rear-Wheel Drive or Long Range: €11,000 for what?

The Belgian line-up recorded on 11 September 2026 on Le Moniteur Automobile runs from €39,990 for the Rear-Wheel Drive to €62,990 for the Performance all-wheel drive, with the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive at €50,990 and the all-wheel drive version at €53,990.

Eleven thousand euros therefore separate the entry model from the Long Range rear-wheel drive. On the Belgian journeys described above, that money mostly buys peace of mind: the one-way trip already worked, the return trip still does not fit inside the 10 to 90 % window, and the charging stop stays on the schedule either way. The calculation tips elsewhere, on a Brussels to Frankfurt or a Brussels to Lyon, or for someone with no socket at home who wants to limit rapid-charger visits.

Is the range shown on the Model Y dashboard reliable?

By default the display is a projection based on homologation consumption, not on how you have been driving for the last few minutes. It therefore does not move when you go from 90 to 130 km/h, while consumption rises by almost half. Switching the display to battery percentage rather than kilometres gives a more honest reading, and the built-in trip planner does account for speed and temperature, unlike the gauge.

Is the Long Range worth €11,000 more?

On Belgian journeys, rarely. The Rear-Wheel Drive at €39,990 covers Brussels to Arlon, Brussels to Antwerp or Brussels to the coast one way without discussion, and on a winter return trip both versions stop once anyway. The €11,000 makes sense if you regularly drive more than 300 km in one go outside Belgium, or if you have no home charging and want to space out rapid-charger visits.

The Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive remains the most efficient electric SUV in our Belgian ranking, and that is exactly what makes the missing capacity figure irritating: the car has nothing to hide, the spec sheet does. For Belgian use, the €39,990 entry model is enough in almost every case, and the €11,000 of the Long Range earns its keep mainly beyond our borders.
