How to calculate the profitability of an electric vehicle?

The TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) formula is: total cost = purchase price + energy cost over the period. Energy cost is: km/year × duration × consumption kWh/100km × price per kWh ÷ 100. This simulator applies the formula and compares with a petrol equivalent if you provide the data.

This calculation is indicative: it does not include insurance, residual vehicle value, or wallbox installation costs (€500–1,500). For a complete calculation, add €700–900/year for EV maintenance versus €1,400–1,800/year for a petrol car.

Frequently asked questions — EV cost and profitability

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

At home at €0.28/kWh, charging a 60 kWh battery costs about €17. On a public AC charger (€0.45/kWh), about €27. On a motorway DC fast charger (€0.65–0.80/kWh), between €39 and €48 for an 80% charge. Savings compared to petrol remain significant: a petrol car at 6.5 L/100 km costs about €10 per 100 km; an EV at 16 kWh/100 km costs €4.50 at home for the same distance.

Is an electric car profitable in Belgium?

Yes, in most cases. Thanks to energy savings (€3–6 per 100 km vs €10–14 for petrol) and reduced maintenance, the financial break-even point is typically between 4 and 7 years depending on mileage. This simulator calculates your personalised profitability in seconds.

How to recoup the cost of an electric car?

The payback accelerates with mileage: at 20,000 km/year, energy savings accumulate twice as fast as at 10,000 km/year. Key levers: charge mainly at home (lowest rate) and compare with a realistic petrol equivalent.

Are there still EV purchase incentives in Belgium in 2026?

Direct grants for private buyers have been scrapped in all three Belgian regions. What remains: very low registration tax (TMC), 100% deductibility for self-employed and companies (final year), and a €3,000 second-hand EV premium in Flanders.

What is the maintenance cost difference between electric and petrol?

An EV costs on average 40–50% less to maintain than a petrol car. Over 5 years at 15,000 km/year, maintenance savings typically amount to €1,500–3,000.

How to calculate mileage allowances for an electric car?

The Belgian mileage allowance applies equally to electric vehicles. For 2025–2026, the rate is €0.4299/km (self-employed and civil servants).
