Our review of the Hyundai IONIQ 5

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the most versatile electric SUV in its price bracket in Belgium. 800 V architecture, 10→80% charging in 18 minutes, a flat floor, a 527 L boot and an 8-year battery warranty — all from €41,990, which is €3,000 less than the technically similar Kia EV6. It appeals equally to families and high-mileage drivers.

Driving & comfort

The IONIQ 5 drives with a calming neutrality: the steering is light, the suspension absorbs the potholes of the Brussels ring and the degraded sections of the E411 (Brussels–Luxembourg motorway) without ever feeling harsh. The flat floor (E-GMP platform) frees up exceptional rear legroom for the class. The 160 mm ground clearance handles Walloon country roads without pretending to be an off-roader. The 2,012 kg kerb weight is easy to forget in normal use but makes itself known on a wet motorway.

Daily charging

The 800 V technology accepts up to 233 kW DC: at an Ionity 350 kW or Fastned charger (located on the E40, E19 and E411 motorways), the 10→80% charge takes 18 minutes, recovering around 350 km. At the Allego 50 kW chargers in Belfius and Interparking car parks in Brussels or Ghent, allow 55 to 65 minutes. At home on an 11 kW wallbox, 60 kWh charges in around 5h30. The IONIQ 5 also comes standard with V2L (Vehicle-to-Load, 3.6 kW): a built-in 230 V socket lets you power an electric bike, a camping fridge, or tools on a worksite.

Total cost of ownership

A driver covering 18,000 km/year saves roughly €1,200 to €1,500 in fuel compared with a diesel SUV of the same size (IONIQ 5: ~20 kWh/100 km at €0.30/kWh vs 7.5 L diesel at €1.80). Belgium's TMC (registration tax) on EVs stays at €61.50. As a company car, 100% tax-deductibility applies to orders placed before end-2026; the BIK (ATN) on a list price of €41,990 works out to around €250/month. The 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty (70% capacity threshold) is among the best on the market. One caveat: Hyundai's vehicle warranty is 5 years / 150,000 km — one year less than the 7 years Kia offers on the EV6.

Strengths
  • 10→80% in 18 min on a 350 kW charger thanks to 800 V architecture
  • 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty: one of the longest on the market
  • 527 L boot + flat floor: the most spacious in its price class
  • V2L as standard (3.6 kW): 230 V socket for powering external equipment
  • From €41,990: €3,000 less than the Kia EV6 with similar specs
Weaknesses
  • Vehicle warranty of only 5 years (vs 7 years on the Kia EV6)
  • Real-world range of 390 km: 30 km less than the EV6 despite the same battery
  • Polarising design (retro-futurist): not for everyone
  • Hyundai service network less dense than VW or BMW in rural Wallonia
Our verdict

For a Belgian family that wants space, fast charging and 8 years of battery peace of mind, the IONIQ 5 is the best value for money in its class in 2024. The 5-year vehicle warranty (versus 7 years on the Kia EV6) is the only area where it gives ground.

Best for

A family of four looking for space and versatility, a company-car driver wanting the best battery warranty on the market, a user who needs V2L for leisure or on-site work.

Less suitable if…

A sporty driver looking for a refined dynamic character, or a buyer sensitive to the length of the full vehicle warranty.
