A V2L adapter turns your car's Type 2 charging port into a 230 V socket, up to roughly 3.5 kW. It is useless if the car lacks the feature from the factory. Budget 71.95 € for a generic unit, 400 € for Renault's, and check compatibility before anything else.

What exactly does a V2L adapter do?

A V2L adapter (for Vehicle-to-Load) is a connector that plugs into the car's Type 2 charging port and offers one or more 230 V household sockets on the other end. The car then supplies alternating current drawn from its traction battery, while parked, for a cool box, an e-bike battery, a jigsaw or a kettle.

It produces nothing itself. The inverter that converts the battery's direct current into 230 V sits inside the car: it is the on-board charger, when that charger is bidirectional. The adapter tells the car it is being asked to deliver rather than receive, then carries the current to your sockets. The seller Tesery says so itself, in capital letters, on its product page: its adapter does not add V2L to a car that does not have it.

Kia Belgium says the same on its Vehicle-to-Load page: to use the function through the external port, "you will need the external V2L adapter". Some models add an interior socket, under the rear bench or in the boot, which needs no accessory at all. Our overview of cars with a 230 V outlet lists them.

Which cars accept a V2L adapter in Belgium?

Korean models, recent Renaults, MG, BYD and the new-generation Nissan Leaf. Not European Teslas, not the Volkswagen ID.3, not the old Leaf. The table gives the reflex to have, car by car.

The Kia EV3 and the Twingo deserve a closer look, because they catch out used-car buyers. The feature exists on the model and appears in the brochure, but it depends on an option: a 1,500 € Charger Pack tied to the heat pump on the EV3, the 500 € Advanced Charge Pack on the Twingo. A car ordered without the option will deliver nothing, whatever the adapter.

Is there a Tesla V2L adapter in Europe?

Not officially. Since August 2026 Tesla has sold an Outlet Adapter in the United States, at 80 dollars before tax, rated 120 V and 20 A, so 2.4 kW, for Model Y Premium cars fitted with the third-generation mobile connector, according to Journal du Geek on 25 August 2026. In Korea, a 3.5 kW adapter at 145,000 won has been available since July, compatible with the six-seat Model Y L only. For Europe, nothing. Accessory shops already present their generic units as compatible with the latest Model Y Performance; as long as Tesla Belgium publishes nothing, I would not buy one.

Does the Lectron adapter fit a Belgian Ioniq 5?

No. It is designed for North America: J1772 connector on the car side, NEMA 5-15 socket at 115 V on the appliance side, 120.99 dollars. A European Ioniq 5 has a Type 2 port, and the adapter simply does not fit.

Original or generic adapter: which one to buy?

Original when the brand supplies it with the car or sells it at a defensible price. Generic only if the seller names your European model and publishes verifiable specifications.

Between the Renault adapter and Tesery's generic V2L cable, the gap is 5.6 times. The materials do not explain it. The original adapter is validated by the manufacturer for your on-board charger, and if the charging port is damaged, nobody will hold the accessory against you. The generic one states 3.5 kW, 16 A and a "weather-resistant" cover, but its page mentions neither an ingress protection rating nor a certification. For occasional use in the dry, it does the job; for a building site in November under the Bastogne drizzle, I would pay for the brand's adapter.

Hyundai and Kia publish no Belgian price for their adapter. Before you go looking, check your order form: depending on the version, it may come with the car.

Six points to check before ordering

  • V2L must appear in the manual for your version, not just in the model brochure. The EV3 and the Twingo show why.
  • The car-side connector must be a European Type 2, defined by the IEC 62196 standard. A North American J1772 will not fit.
  • 16 A is enough: at 230 V that is 3.7 kW, as much as the most generous V2L sold here, Renault's.
  • The adapter's sockets are almost always Schuko (type F, side earth contacts), whereas the Belgian wall socket is type E, with an earth pin. Plugs sold in Belgium are mostly hybrid (CEE 7/7) and fit both; an old extension lead with a pure type E plug will not pick up the earth on a Schuko socket.
  • A stated ingress protection rating, IP44 at the very least for outdoor use. No rating, no rain.
  • A switch and an indicator light, as on the Kia adapter, so you can cut the supply without yanking the connector.

How much does electricity from the V2L socket cost?

The price of your charge, plus losses.

Charged at home, every kilowatt-hour the car delivers costs 0.35 € in Flanders, 0.39 € in Brussels and 0.42 € in Wallonia. The calculation starts from the price caps published by the CREG (the Belgian energy regulator) for the third quarter of 2026 (32.22, 35.68 and 37.83 euro cents per kWh) and adds 10% of alternating-current charging losses, the usual order of magnitude. Kilometres lost assume consumption of 16.5 kWh per 100 km.

In-house calculation. Appliance power ratings are indicative: read yours from its rating plate.

The cool box and the bikes weigh nothing. The heater changes the day: almost a hundred kilometres gone overnight, and if the battery was charged on a fast charger at 0.89 € per kWh, the top of the range surveyed by Moniteur Automobile in July 2026, the same night costs at least 14.24 €. On a weekend in the Ardennes with two children and a full boot, that is the difference between driving home in one go and hunting for a free charge point in Marche on a Sunday evening. Set the discharge limit in the V2L menu (Kia offers it as a percentage and cuts the supply automatically when it is reached) and keep enough to reach the nearest charge point.

Another benchmark, harsher on expensive adapters: Renault's 400 € adapter pays for 1,128 kWh at the Flemish rate. Seventy nights of space heater.

Can I power my house from the V2L adapter?

No, and certainly not through a wall socket. A male-to-male lead between the adapter and a household socket sends 230 V back through the whole installation, makes the pins of the free plug live and can, during a power cut, re-energise the line a grid operator's technician is working on.

In Belgium the RGIE (the General Regulation on Electrical Installations), whose Book 1 has applied since 1 April 2026, governs any source that feeds a domestic installation: in principle, a generator, like a car, can only be connected through a changeover device fitted by an approved electrician and then inspected. Powering the house from the car is V2H, with a bidirectional charger and a dedicated installation. Our update on bidirectional charging covers what is available here. V2L remains one appliance at a time, at the end of an extension lead.

Five steps for first use

The procedure follows the one Kia Belgium publishes for its models, and its general safety guidelines are worth five minutes before your first camping trip. Other brands work on the same principle; your car's manual takes precedence.

  1. Set the discharge limit in the car's V2L settings, at a level that still gets you to a charge point.
  2. Add up the power of your appliances: the total must stay under 3.5 kW. A 2,000 W kettle and a 2,000 W heater together is a no.
  3. Plug the appliances in first on the adapter and close its cover, then insert the adapter into the charging port.
  4. Press the adapter's switch and check that the indicator lights up.
  5. To stop, switch off at the adapter, then release the charging flap lock with the key's door-unlock button before removing the adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Does a V2L adapter work on every electric car?

No. The inverter that produces the 230 V sits inside the car; the adapter only activates it and carries the current. Without factory V2L, as on a Volkswagen ID.3, a European Tesla or a CHAdeMO Nissan Leaf, the adapter delivers nothing. Check the manual for your exact version before buying.

How much does a V2L adapter cost in Belgium?

From 71.95 € for a generic Tesery unit with a 5 m cable and four Schuko sockets, checked on 5 October 2026, to 400 € for Renault's adapter on the Mégane E-Tech. Hyundai and Kia publish no Belgian price: ask the dealer, and check whether it is already on your order form.

Does a generic adapter void the warranty?

In principle, the warranty does not lapse just because you use a third-party accessory. If that accessory damages the charging port or the on-board charger, however, the manufacturer may refuse to cover the repair. Ask your dealer for a written answer before plugging a generic adapter into a car under warranty.

Can I use V2L in the rain?

With care. Kia asks you to close the adapter's cover once the appliances are plugged in, and Tesery advises against use in heavy rain despite its spring-loaded cover. Keep sockets and extension leads dry, under an awning or in the boot, and prefer an adapter that states its ingress protection rating.

Can I charge another electric car with a V2L adapter?

Yes, as a rescue. You plug the stranded car's mode 2 cable into one of the adapter's sockets. Set to 10 A, that cable draws about 2.3 kW, or roughly 14 km gained per hour at 16.5 kWh per 100 km. Enough to reach a charge point, not enough to set off on holiday.

Does V2L wear the battery?

No more than a drive using the same energy. A 3.5 kW draw is far below a fast charge of 50 kW or more. The real risk lies elsewhere: draining the battery so far that you can no longer reach a charge point. Set the discharge limit in the V2L menu before first use.

Is the Tesla V2L adapter sold in Belgium?

No, as of 5 October 2026. Tesla's Outlet Adapter is sold in the United States, at 120 V and 2.4 kW, and a 3.5 kW adapter exists in Korea for the Model Y L only. Tesla has announced no European version. Generic units claiming compatibility with the latest Model Y are not confirmed by Tesla Belgium.

Le verdict de Christophe F.

Start with the manual, not the shop: if your version lacks factory V2L, no adapter will give it one. If it has it, take the brand's adapter when it is supplied or reasonably priced, and a 71.95 € generic only for use in the dry, on a car whose European model the seller names. Set the discharge limit, keep the house out of the equation, and compare the V2L output of new models in our comparison tool.
