Our review of the BYD Seal
The BYD Seal Comfort is listed at €42,500 including VAT on the Belgian price list recorded on 3 October 2026. Rear-wheel drive with 231 hp, a 61.4 kWh LFP battery and 460 km WLTP: the size of a large saloon for the price of a premium compact. The Seal's entry ticket has gone back and forth, though: from €46,990 in September 2023 to €39,000 in October 2024, and it is rising again. On the road, charging capped at 110 kW and a real-world range of 354 km put it behind most of its rivals.
Driving & comfort
Start with what the data sheet says plainly. The Comfort delivers 170 kW (231 hp) and 380 Nm through the rear axle only, does 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and weighs 2,045 kg, according to the EV Database sheet consulted on 3 October 2026. It is brisk, no more. Weight is the first thing to look at: the more powerful Seal, the 313 hp, 82.5 kWh Design that Automobile Propre tested (Supertest published on 19 May 2024), weighed 2,130 kg, and the site noted that this weight hurts consumption at a steady speed. I did not find a Supertest of the 61.4 kWh Comfort: the road figures below are therefore those of its bigger sister, scaled to the smaller battery, and I say so each time. On space, the Seal is a proper five-seater with three ISOFIX points, a 485-litre boot (1,440 litres with the rear seats folded) and a small 72-litre front boot, per the EV Database. Towing is capped at 750 kg braked. This is not a towing car. A heat pump comes as standard on the entry version, which matters in a Belgian winter. One thing I take away: this saloon does not try to be the most frugal of its segment, and it is not.
Daily charging
An 11 kW onboard AC charger. On a three-phase wallbox, allow about 5 hours to go from 10 to 100% (calculation: 55 kWh usable, charging losses of around 10% included). In Brussels, on a 3x230 V supply without a neutral where a wallbox tops out around 6.4 kW, it rises to 8 h 30 for the same full charge. On a household socket at 2.3 kW, 24 hours: for emergencies only. On direct current, the sheet quotes a 110 kW peak and 36 minutes from 10 to 80%. That is the lowest figure of the eight saloons in our 3 October ranking, far from the 175 kW of a Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive that costs €6,510 less. A forty-minute coffee break on the E411, everyone gets used to it. The motorway beyond 120 km/h is a different problem. Automobile Propre measured the Seal Design at 22.4 kWh/100 km at motorway pace and 23.5 kWh/100 km at 130 km/h. Applying 22.4 kWh/100 km to the Comfort's 61.4 kWh battery gives about 270 km in total and 190 km between 80 and 10%, just enough for a Brussels to Arlon run without a precautionary stop. The EV Database, for its part, gives 168 Wh/km real-world consumption and 365 km of range, against 354 km with our 0.77 coefficient. The two methods converge. V2L (vehicle-to-load, powering a device from the battery) is quoted at 3.3 kW by the EV Database.
Total cost of ownership
As a company car, the Seal Comfort lands right on the Belgian floor. The 2026 formula for an electric car, list value x 4% x 6/7, gives €1,457.14 a year for €42,500. That is below the legal minimum of €1,690, so the ATN (benefit in kind) is €140.83 a month, like the Model 3, the IONIQ 6 or the Polestar 2. On energy, over 15,000 km a year at 15.4 kWh/100 km at the socket (154 Wh/km per the EV Database), or 20.0 kWh/100 km in use once divided by 0.77, you need 3,000 kWh. At the CREG caps for the third quarter of 2026 (32.22, 35.68 and 37.83 c€/kWh), that comes to €966.60 in Flanders, €1,070.40 in Brussels and €1,134.90 in Wallonia. Against a Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, that is €176 more a year in Wallonia. Added over four years to the list-price gap, the Seal's extra cost reaches €7,214. For taxes, Wallonia can be worked out: the registration tax (TMC) hits its €50 floor and the annual road tax on an electric car is €107.18 for the period from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, per SPW Finances. The Brussels and Flemish amounts for the Seal were not published at the survey date and I do not guess them. Over four years in Wallonia, list price, taxes and electricity add up to €47,518.32. One last price marker: according to Autotijd, the entry version fell from €46,990 to €39,000 between September 2023 and October 2024. At €42,500, it has taken back €3,500 since. The battery is warranted for 8 years or 250,000 km and the car for 6 years or 150,000 km according to BYD, to be confirmed on the Belgian order form.
- Price of €42,500 on the Belgian list of 3 October 2026, €7,110 under the Mercedes CLA 200 at €49,610 and €5,699 under the IONIQ 6 63 kWh at €48,199, for a large five-seat saloon
- 61.4 kWh LFP battery warranted 8 years or 250,000 km, a chemistry known for ageing well and tolerant of daily charging to 100%
- ATN at the €140.83 monthly floor, no penalty as a company car compared with a €48,000 saloon
- Heat pump as standard, 11 kW charger, 485-litre boot plus 72 litres at the front and V2L quoted at 3.3 kW
- Rapid charging capped at 110 kW and 36 minutes from 10 to 80%, the lowest of the eight saloons in our 3 October 2026 ranking
- Real-world range of 354 km (365 km per the EV Database), the shortest in the ranking: a Brussels to Arlon run takes about 190 usable km at 120 km/h and above
- Consumption of 15.4 kWh/100 km at the socket, or €1,134.90 of electricity a year in Wallonia and €176 more than a Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive
- Entry price up €3,500 since October 2024 (€39,000 then €42,500) and a weight of 2,045 kg
Our verdictThe Seal Comfort remains a roomy, well-equipped saloon for €42,500, but it is no longer the bargain of 2024. It loses on the three figures that count day to day: range, charging and consumption. I would take it for urban and suburban use with a home wallbox, and look elsewhere for high mileage.
A household that mostly drives in town and its outskirts, charges at home every evening and wants plenty of space for under €43,000; an employee whose company caps ATN at the floor and leaves the choice of model open.
A high-mileage motorway driver who chains Brussels-Liège-Luxembourg, anyone counting on short charging stops, and a buyer for whom electricity cost per kilometre comes first: a Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive does it for €6,510 less.

What is the BYD Seal's battery warranty?
BYD quotes 8 years or 250,000 km on the high-voltage battery and 6 years or 150,000 km on the vehicle. These terms come from the manufacturer's warranty page: the Belgian conditions are in the order form and the booklet handed over at delivery.
BYD Seal or Tesla Model 3: which should you pick in Belgium?
The Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive costs €35,990 against €42,500, uses 13.0 kWh/100 km against 15.4, charges up to 175 kW against 110 and costs €176 less in electricity a year in Wallonia. The Seal keeps the edge of a big 485-litre boot and an LFP battery warranted for 8 years. On the figures, the Tesla wins.
