Our review of the Tesla Model Y Propulsion

The Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive opens the range at €39,990 on the Belgian price list surveyed on 15 September 2026, and it is the version that makes the most sense here. 534 km WLTP, 411 km in real use, 854 L of boot space: on paper nothing is missing. Two reservations all the same. Tesla does not publish the usable capacity of its battery, and rapid charging peaks at 175 kW on this version, not the 250 kW everyone repeats.

Driving & comfort

The Juniper facelift fixed the main complaint aimed at the old Model Y: noise. Double glazing at the front, reworked insulation, retuned suspension, and you hear the result from the first kilometre of the E40 motorway. Damping stays firm, though, especially on 20-inch wheels. Concrete expansion joints on the R0 ring road and Brussels cobbles come through into the cabin, without harshness but without softness either. That is the house compromise: faultless stability at 120 km/h fully loaded, ride comfort a step behind a Škoda Enyaq or a VW ID.4. The serious criticism lies elsewhere. Front suspension noises on Juniper cars have been covered by a Tesla service bulletin, with replacement of the front upper control arm bushings and the front dampers on affected vehicles. It is not an official recall, but it is documented, and it is the first thing to have checked at handover. At the back, 854 L of boot and 2,138 L with the seats folded, plus a deep well under the floor that swallows cables and a pushchair. Two child seats and a dog fit without negotiation. The wide-angle reversing camera, on the other hand, flattens distances: parallel parking in Brussels, you trust the sensors rather than the image.

Daily charging

An 11 kW three-phase onboard charger, so roughly 6h30 for a full charge on a home wallbox, and a little over 9h on single-phase 7.4 kW. Nothing original, and that is fine. On direct current, the Rear-Wheel Drive accepts a 175 kW peak. The 250 kW figure quoted everywhere applies to the Long Range versions, not this one, and Tesla publishes no official 10 to 80% time: the 31 minutes used on this sheet come from cross-checking, not from a manufacturer figure. The Supercharger network remains the argument rivals still have not matched: automatic routing in the navigation, battery preconditioning triggered without any input, invisible payment. On a Brussels to Arlon run on the E411, the outward leg goes in one hop in any season. The round trip, never, not even in July. In January, on the motorway, car loaded and heating on, the gap to the brochure figure reaches 56% if you work on a realistic 90 to 10% charging window. That is not a Model Y flaw, it is motorway physics in winter, but on a car sold on its 534 km it has to be said before signing.

Total cost of ownership

The Model Y range is the best Belgian textbook case of the ATN (benefit-in-kind) threshold, and the outcome is surprising. The 2026 formula for an electric company car, list price × 4% × 6/7, puts the tipping point at €49,292. At €39,990, the Rear-Wheel Drive sits €9,302 below that threshold and therefore pays the legal floor of €1,690/year, or €140.83/month. The Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive at €50,990 clears the threshold by a mere €1,698 and comes out at €145.69/month. Eleven thousand euros more on the list price, €4.86 more of monthly benefit in kind: on this range, moving up a version costs the driver almost nothing as long as you stay below the Performance, which climbs to €179.97/month for €62,990. One caution: Belgian pricing databases publish benefit-in-kind figures that cannot be reproduced with the legal formula, €142.83/month quoted on the Rear-Wheel Drive and €188.54 on the Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive. We stick to the legal calculation and flag the discrepancy. On energy, over 15,000 km a year at 17.0 kWh/100 km in mixed use, the home electricity bill works out at €822 in Flanders, €910 in Brussels and €965 in Wallonia, at the Q3 2026 caps set by the CREG, Belgium's federal energy regulator (32.22, 35.68 and 37.83 c€/kWh). Then the taxes: €61.50 of TMC (registration tax) and €92.93 of annual road tax in Flanders as surveyed by Moniteur Automobile, against a TMC floor of €50 and €107.18 a year in Wallonia for the period running from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Brussels was not listed on the day of the survey.

Strengths
  • €39,990 on the Belgian price list of 15 September 2026, which is €9,302 below the €49,292 benefit-in-kind threshold: legal floor of €140.83/month as a company car
  • 854 L of boot space and 2,138 L with the seats folded, plus a deep well under the floor for cables
  • Supercharger network with automatic preconditioning and built-in payment, still without equal on the Belgian market
  • Acoustic insulation reworked in the Juniper facelift: front double glazing and clearly reduced road noise on the motorway
  • 411 km of real-world range in mixed use in mild weather, against a homologated 534 km WLTP
Weaknesses
  • Front suspension noises documented on Juniper cars, handled through a Tesla service bulletin replacing the front upper control arm bushings and the front dampers: have it checked at handover
  • Rapid charging capped at 175 kW on the Rear-Wheel Drive, not the 250 kW commonly quoted, and no 10 to 80% time published by the manufacturer
  • Tesla does not publish the usable battery capacity: the 69.9 kWh on this sheet is recalculated, not disclosed
  • Firm damping on 20-inch wheels, and a wide-angle reversing camera that flattens distances in tight manoeuvres
Our verdict

At €39,990, the Rear-Wheel Drive is the Model Y to buy in Belgium: it stays under the benefit-in-kind threshold, it offers the same boot and the same charging network as the €54,000 versions, and what it mainly gives up is rapid-charging power. The criticism fits in one sentence: Tesla sells a 534 km range figure without publishing the capacity that produces it. On the E411 in January, count on half of it.

Best for

A Belgian family that charges at home, covers 15,000 to 25,000 km a year and makes a few long trips, or a company-car driver who wants the benefit-in-kind floor together with genuine boot volume.

Less suitable if…

Anyone after the ride comfort of an Enyaq or an ID.4, anyone charging exclusively on non-Tesla rapid chargers, or anyone who needs the 250 kW charging rate advertised on the Long Range versions.

Tesla Model Y Propulsion in Belgium — what you need to know

Typical Belgian trips

With 411 real km, the Model Y Propulsion covers Brussels–Ardennes (≈ 260 km return) without charging, Brussels–Coast (≈ 220 km return) without charging.

Tax benefit

For self-employed and companies, this model is 100% tax-deductible in 2026 (last year at this rate). No direct purchase grant for individuals. Road tax is greatly reduced for this EV.

Home charging

With 11 kW AC, a full charge from 20% takes approximately 5 hours on an 11 kW wallbox. On a 230V plug (2.3 kW): about 24 hours. Overnight charging easily covers the average 50–80 km/day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — Tesla Model Y Propulsion

How much does the Tesla Model Y cost in Belgium in 2026?

As surveyed on 15 September 2026, the Belgian range runs from €39,990 for the Rear-Wheel Drive to €62,990 for the Performance All-Wheel Drive, with the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive at €50,990 and the Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive at €53,990. These prices include VAT and exclude options and paint.

What is the real-world range of the Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive?

Expect 411 km in mixed use in mild weather, against a homologated 534 km WLTP. On the motorway in winter, car loaded and heating on, the gap to the brochure figure reaches 56% once you work on a realistic 90 to 10% charging window rather than the whole battery. A Brussels to Arlon run goes in one hop all year, the round trip never does.

What benefit in kind does a Tesla Model Y pay as a Belgian company car?

The €39,990 Rear-Wheel Drive pays the legal floor of €1,690/year, or €140.83/month: the 2026 formula for an electric car, list price × 4% × 6/7, gives €1,371/year, below the taxable minimum. The Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive at €50,990 comes out at €145.69/month, the Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive at €154.26 and the Performance at €179.97. The tipping point sits at €49,292.

Does the Tesla Model Y really charge at 250 kW?

Not the Rear-Wheel Drive, which peaks at 175 kW. The advertised 250 kW applies to the Long Range versions. Tesla also publishes no official 10 to 80% time for the Model Y: the 31 minutes used on our sheet come from cross-checked measurements, not from a manufacturer figure.

What is the actual battery capacity of the Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive?

Tesla does not disclose it, which remains unusual for a volume manufacturer. The 69.9 kWh usable used here is recalculated from the homologated consumption and the WLTP range. To compare two cars on cost per kilometre, the figure to look at is consumption in kWh/100 km, not the quoted capacity.

How much does charging a Tesla Model Y at home cost in Belgium?

Over 15,000 km a year at 17.0 kWh/100 km in mixed use, allow €822 in Flanders, €910 in Brussels and €965 in Wallonia, at the Q3 2026 caps set by the CREG (32.22, 35.68 and 37.83 c€/kWh). That is €143 a year between the cheapest and the most expensive region, for the same car and the same mileage.

Does the Tesla Model Y Juniper have suspension problems?

Front suspension noises have been reported on Juniper cars and have been covered by a Tesla service bulletin providing for replacement of the front upper control arm bushings and the front dampers on affected vehicles. It is not an official recall. At handover, drive over cobbles and speed bumps before you sign the delivery slip.

How big is the Tesla Model Y boot?

854 L with the rear bench in place and 2,138 L with the seats folded, plus a deep well under the floor that takes the charging cables without eating into usable volume. It is one of the best exterior-footprint-to-load-volume ratios in the segment, and by far this car's most concrete argument for a family.
