Our review of the Renault Mégane E-Tech

The Renault Mégane E-Tech upended the design conventions of the compact electric saloon. Its break-from-the-mould styling, quality cabin and 130 kW DC charging make it a serious proposition. Its main drawback: a 40 kWh battery capacity that limits real-world range to 230 km, below several direct rivals. A choice that rewards those who put the driving experience and design first.

Driving & comfort

The Mégane E-Tech surprises within the first few kilometres with its strong character. The CMF-EV platform (EV-dedicated) gives a low centre of gravity that markedly improves roadholding compared with petrol-engined compact saloons. The steering is precise and the suspension well tuned to combine comfort on poor Belgian surfaces with composure through the bends. The cabin, inspired by the Mégane eVision concept, offers a clean centre console, two well-integrated screens and materials that raise the bar for the class. The one downside: the rear seats are a little tight on legroom for taller passengers.

Daily charging

130 kW DC charging is the Mégane E-Tech's ace. On a fast charger (Ionity, Fastned), it goes from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes — the same performance as a Tesla Model 3 on the old 50 kW networks. AC charging, on the other hand, is its weak point: capped at 7.4 kW, a full charge takes 4 to 5 hours on an 11 kW wallbox. You don't make full use of your wallbox's power. For drivers who charge mostly at home overnight, that's not an issue — but if you don't have a wallbox and depend on public AC chargers (22 kW), you lose a significant advantage.

Total cost of ownership

At €35,990, the Mégane E-Tech sits at the upper end of its class. In everyday use ≤ 150 km/day, running costs are very competitive: around €0.05 to €0.06/km on home electricity. Renault's service network is well spread across Belgium with a dense dealer footprint. Over 5 years the total cost of ownership stays favourable, provided you don't lean too much on paid public chargers, whose tariffs can reach €0.60 to €0.80/kWh.

Strengths
  • Class-leading exterior design and cabin
  • 130 kW DC charging: 10→80% in just 30 minutes
  • Perceived quality and ergonomics clearly improved vs the conventional Mégane
  • Agile, dynamic road manners thanks to the CMF-EV platform
  • Very low TMC (registration tax) at registration
Weaknesses
  • 40 kWh battery = only 230 km real-world — not enough for some uses
  • AC charging capped at 7.4 kW: slow on an 11 kW home wallbox
  • Big-battery version (60 kWh) hard to find in stock in Belgium
  • High price for the range on offer
Our verdict

The Mégane E-Tech is a brilliant car when it comes to design and the driving experience. But its 230 km real-world range puts it below its direct rivals. Choose it for what it is: a stylish urban compact saloon, not a long-distance car. If range is your main criterion, look at the Enyaq iV 80 or the IONIQ 6.

Best for

A design enthusiast and everyday driver covering less than 150 km a day, with access to fast charging on the road.

Less suitable if…

A driver regularly covering more than 200 km in one go, or a family wanting the most boot space and range for their budget.

Renault Mégane E-Tech in Belgium — what you need to know

Typical Belgian trips

With 230 real km, the Mégane E-Tech covers Brussels–Ardennes (≈ 260 km return) with a fast charge, but is limited on coastal trips.

Tax benefit

For self-employed and companies, this model is 100% tax-deductible in 2026 (last year at this rate). No direct purchase grant for individuals. Road tax is greatly reduced for this EV.

Home charging

With 7.4 kW AC, a full charge from 20% takes approximately 4 hours on an 11 kW wallbox. On a 230V plug (2.3 kW): about 14 hours. Overnight charging easily covers the average 50–80 km/day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questionsRenault Mégane E-Tech

Why is the Mégane E-Tech's real-world range lower than its WLTP figure?

The Mégane E-Tech's 300 km WLTP is measured under ideal conditions. In Belgium, on the motorway at 120 km/h in winter, reckon on 200 to 240 km real-world. Its 40 kWh battery, the smallest in its class, explains the gap. The 60 kWh version (available to order) offers around 300 km real-world.

Does the Mégane E-Tech charge quickly?

On DC (CCS), its 130 kW lets it go from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes. That's excellent for its class and battery size. On AC via a wallbox, it's capped at 7.4 kW — allow around 4 hours for a full charge from 20%.

What's the difference between the 40 kWh and 60 kWh Mégane E-Tech?

The 40 kWh version (300 km WLTP, ≈ 230 km real-world) is the most common in stock. The 60 kWh version (470 km WLTP, ≈ 360 km real-world) is available to order in Belgium but with lead times. The price gap is around €5,000. For mixed city/motorway use, the 60 kWh is worth the extra.

Is the Mégane E-Tech comfortable for 4 people?

Yes, for 4 adults. The cabin is spacious, perceived quality is high and the driving position pleasant. The 389 L boot is fine but not exceptional. For a family with young children and lots of luggage, an SUV like the Enyaq iV 80 will suit better.

Does the Mégane E-Tech have a heat pump?

Yes, the Mégane E-Tech comes with a heat pump as standard on most trims sold in Belgium. That's an important advantage for winter range: the cold-weather range loss is limited to 15-20% instead of 30-35% without a heat pump.

Can you connect the Mégane E-Tech to a mobile app?

Yes, via the My Renault app. It lets you schedule charging during off-peak hours, precondition the cabin (heating or cooling while plugged in), monitor the battery's state and locate nearby chargers. Connectivity is one of the Mégane E-Tech's strong points.

Is the Mégane E-Tech available on lease in Belgium?

Yes, at most Belgian Renault dealers. Operational lease or long-term renting deals let you fold maintenance and insurance into a fixed monthly payment. For the self-employed and SMEs, leasing also offers attractive tax benefits on fully electric vehicles.
