The Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive wins this ranking at €39,990, with 411 km of real-world range and the lowest electricity bill of the seven. Behind it, the Kia EV3 81.4 kWh goes further for €2,000 more, and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 charges twice as fast as the rest of the field.

The SUV has become the default body style of electric motoring in Belgium, and it is also the one where mistakes cost the most. Two tonnes drinking 22 kWh per 100 km instead of 17 means three hundred euros more electricity every year, for eight years. So I ranked these seven on what they actually cost a household here, not on their press kit.

What counts as an electric SUV, and where does the segment stop?

An electric SUV is a fully electric five-seater with a raised body and raised ground clearance, usually between 4.30 m and 4.80 m long. The segment covers compact crossovers such as the Kia EV3 and tall family cars such as the Tesla Model Y or the Škoda Enyaq.

Two neighbours blur the line. The urban crossover under 4.20 m (Jeep Avenger, Volvo EX30) has the footprint of a raised city car and belongs in the small electric car ranking. The large seven-seat SUV (Hyundai IONIQ 9, Kia EV9) goes past 4.90 m and moves into another budget. The seven models kept here all sit in the same box: five seats, a boot over 400 litres, everyday family use.

One point worth making: none of these seven is a 4x4. The twin-motor versions give useful traction on a frozen car park ramp in Namur, and nothing more. For an Ardennes forest track, 160 mm of ground clearance is not enough, and no manufacturer claims otherwise.

What criteria separate these seven SUVs?

Five criteria. Real-world range carries the most weight, because it is the first thing an SUV buyer wants to know. The Belgian list price follows closely. Then comes DC charging, decisive as soon as you leave the ring road. Belgian running cost, calculated region by region, counts for 15%, and it is the criterion nobody else measures. Boot space closes the list.

What holds it back

Only a 175 kW peak, against 250 kW on the Long Range versions, and 82 kW of average power across the 10 to 80% range. Tesla publishes neither the battery capacity nor the charging time for this version, which makes comparison awkward. And everything runs through the central screen, with no instrument display in front of the driver.

Best for

A household that wants a large family SUV under €40,000 and drives enough for consumption to matter.

What holds it back

A 400-volt architecture, unlike the in-house IONIQ 5 and EV6: charging peaks at 128 kW and needs 31 minutes from 10 to 80%, thirteen minutes more than an IONIQ 5 at every stop. The front-wheel drive also makes itself felt in the wet when you lean on the 204 horsepower, and the 460-litre boot stays modest against the 585 litres of the Enyaq.

Best for

A driver who racks up long trips but parks in a narrow street: 4.30 m and 605 km WLTP in the same car.

What holds it back

22.6 kWh per 100 km in real use, the worst efficiency of the seven: €1,282 of electricity a year in Wallonia, or €317 more than a Model Y. The boot drops to 425 litres despite 4.79 m of length. And the Belgian BYD network is still young, which weighs on resale value.

Best for

A buyer who keeps cars for eight years and looks at the warranty before the badge, and whose electricity budget does not worry them.

What holds it back

€54,900 for 339 real km is the worst ratio in this ranking, and €14,910 more than a Model Y that goes 72 km further. The 400-volt architecture and the FAAR platform, shared with the combustion X1, also cost it a front trunk. Our own field figure on this car was 275 km in real motorway use.

Best for

A driver who mostly covers town and suburbs, cares about perceived quality and charges at home every night.

Range, charging, boot: which one really comes out ahead?

One column needs a word of explanation. Tesla is the only one of the seven manufacturers to publish no 10 to 80% time: the brand quotes kilometres recovered in fifteen minutes, which compares with nothing. The Model Y figure of 31 minutes therefore comes from an independent charging-curve measurement (EVKX), which records 82 kW of average power across the range, far from the 175 kW peak.

The Model Y boot, 835 litres claimed by Tesla, adds the rear compartment, the underfloor bin and the front trunk: it does not compare line for line with the Enyaq's 585 litres.

What does an electric SUV cost in electricity in Belgium, region by region?

Between €822 and €1,282 a year over 15,000 km, depending on model and region. The first figure is the Tesla Model Y in Flanders, the second the BYD Seal U in Wallonia. The choice of model weighs 1.7 times more than the choice of region.

The calculation starts from the stated capacity divided by the real-world range, which gives a usage consumption rather than a homologation figure. Multiply by 15,000 km, then by the electricity price cap set by the CREG for the third quarter of 2026: 32.22 c€/kWh in Flanders, 35.68 c€ in Brussels, 37.83 c€ in Wallonia.

The result is surprising, and it is the point of this ranking. Between the Model Y and the Seal U, the gap reaches €317 a year in Wallonia, or €1,269 over four years. Between Flanders and Wallonia on the same Seal U, the gap is only €190. In other words, a Walloon who picks the most frugal SUV pays less for electricity than a Fleming who picks the thirstiest. Nobody tells you that in a showroom.

Does a €45,990 SUV cost more benefit in kind than a €39,990 one?

No. Six of the seven SUVs here pay exactly the same benefit in kind (BIK, known locally as ATN), because the 2026 electric formula drops them all onto the legal floor of €1,690 a year. Only the BMW iX1 goes above it.

The formula is simple: list value × 4% × 6/7. It only clears the €1,690 floor from €49,292 of list value upwards. From the Model Y at €39,990 to the Seal U at €45,990, the BIK therefore stays frozen at €140.83 a month. Six thousand euros more car, zero euros more tax. The BMW iX1, at €54,900, comes out at €1,882 a year, or €156.86 a month: €192 more, for €14,910 of extra list value.

Regional taxes do not move from one model to the next either. An electric vehicle pays a registration tax (TMC) of €61.50 in Flanders and in Brussels, €50 in Wallonia, and an annual road tax of €102.96, €92.93 and €107.18 respectively. On that line, the seven SUVs are interchangeable.

Three things this ranking leaves out

  • Discounts and leasing terms. They change every month and differ from one dealer to the next. A list price stays comparable, a promotion does not.
  • Residual value at three and five years. The Belgian used electric market is still too young to give reliable figures on models launched in 2025 and 2026.
  • The cost of a tow bar and the range penalty when towing, which do separate these seven a great deal. That subject deserves its own page, not a line in a table.

Should you choose an 800-volt electric SUV?
Only if you regularly drive beyond 300 km in one go. The 800-volt architecture of the Hyundai IONIQ 5 allows 18 minutes from 10 to 80%, against 31 minutes for a 400-volt Kia EV3 and 36 minutes for a Škoda Enyaq. On a daily commute with overnight charging the advantage is nil: you charge on AC, where all of them cap at 11 kW.
Which electric SUV has the biggest boot?
The Škoda Enyaq iV 80, with 585 litres measured to the usual standard, rear bench in place. Then come the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro (543 litres) and the Hyundai IONIQ 5 (527 litres). Tesla quotes 835 litres on the Model Y, but that figure adds the rear boot, the underfloor bin and the front trunk: it does not compare directly with the others.
Can an electric SUV tow a trailer or a caravan in Belgium?
Yes, provided you check the approval model by model. The Škoda Enyaq iV 80 takes 1,200 kg braked with the optional tow bar, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 goes up to 1,600 kg. Then allow 30 to 40% less range with a loaded trailer at 90 km/h, which brings an Enyaq down to roughly 250 real km.
