A cycling weekend in the Ardennes is also a logistics exercise. Two e-bikes in the car, two children with their mountain bikes on the rack, bags in the boot, and at every motorway service area we wanted to access the boot to get the sandwiches. With a classic tailgate bike rack, it's "take everything off or wait". With a tilting tow bar bike rack, you press a lever and the boot opens in five seconds.

Why is boot access blocked with a classic bike rack?

Cyclists heading off for several days on holiday don't live on cycling alone. They have luggage, food, equipment. Blocking boot access the moment the bikes are loaded is a real constraint.

The good news: in 2026, all tow bar bike racks in the mid-to-high segment have a tilting system. It has become the norm. The bad news: compatibility also depends on the geometry of your EV's tailgate, and not all models are equal in this respect.

Which EVs allow boot access with the bike rack loaded?

Two factors determine compatibility: the height at which the tailgate opens (the higher and wider it opens, the better) and the position of the tow bar relative to the tailgate.

RankModelTailgate typeCompatibility with tilting bike rackMax towing
1Tesla Model YSUV, square, motorisedExcellent, high tailgate, xxl clearance1,600 kg
2VW ID.4SUV, squareVery good, vertical tailgate1,200 kg
3Škoda Enyaq 85SUV, large tailgateVery good, wide opening1,200 kg
4Hyundai IONIQ 5SUV, flat tailgateGood, wide tailgate but low to the ground1,600 kg
5Renault Mégane E-TechSloped tailgateAcceptable, tilting required + XXL offset500 kg

No. 1, Tesla Model Y: the most practical for daily use

Its motorised tailgate opens up to 130 cm from the ground. With a tilting bike rack (Thule EasyFold XT, Eufab Premium), the clearance is complete even with four bikes loaded. The tow bar tucks under the bumper. It does not clutter visually and does not touch the tailgate. It is the most practical combination on the market.

No. 2, VW ID.4: the well-designed square tailgate

The ID.4 has an almost vertical tailgate that generally opens without conflict with a standard tow bar bike rack. The tilting system of the main bike rack brands (Thule, Atera) works without modification. The original VW tow bar (removable ball) is well designed and provides good clearance.

No. 3, Škoda Enyaq 85: the large boot, the large tailgate

585 L of boot space, and a wide and high tailgate. Tilting a tow bar bike rack gives access to the full boot space without constraint. It is the most practical EV for families that alternate between a full boot and bikes.

No. 4, Hyundai IONIQ 5: good but lower

The IONIQ 5 has a wide tailgate but its bottom edge sits closer to the ground. With a tilted bike rack, access is possible but less easy than with the Model Y or the ID.4. For models with a motorised tailgate, check that the tilted bike rack does not obstruct the tailgate's travel.

No. 5, Renault Mégane E-Tech: for tighter budgets

The Mégane E-Tech only accepts a bike rack with 500 kg braked towing capacity. That is limited but sufficient for two light bikes. Its sloped tailgate is the least compatible in the selection with tilting systems. With an XXL offset bike rack (such as the Eufab Premium 2 Plus), it is manageable.

Which tilting system to choose for your tow bar bike rack?

Thule EasyFold XT 3 (1,199 €), the top of the range. One-hand tilt, loading ramp for e-bikes, 3 bikes, 60 kg. The reference standard.

Eufab Premium 2 Plus (379 €), the best value for money. XXL tilt with rear offset, 2 bikes, 60 kg. The tilt is more generous than on the Thule for large tailgates.

Atera Giro AF (699 €), sliding system (not tilting): the bike rack slides backwards to clear the tailgate. Very wide clearance, ideal on VW/Škoda.

What to check before buying a bike rack for your EV?

  1. Your EV's towing capacity: it must cover the weight of the bike rack + bikes. Budget 15–20 kg for the bike rack, 20–30 kg per bike. For two e-bikes: 80–90 kg total load.
  2. The tow bar coupling: standard DIN 50 mm or swan neck? Most recent bike racks adapt to both, but check your tow bar specification sheet.
  3. Installation height: the bike rack must not touch or obstruct the reversing camera or parking sensors.
