A reinforced socket delivers 3.2 kW against 2.3 kW on a household socket, which works out at roughly forty extra kilometres per eight-hour night. The Legrand pack costs €199.95 in Belgium. The rest of the bill, dedicated circuit, certified electrician and mandatory inspection, weighs far more than the box itself.

What exactly is a reinforced socket?

A reinforced socket is an oversized household outlet, fitted with a shutter, a reinforced earth contact and a 6 mm² connection capacity, built to take hours of continuous charging without heating up. It looks like an ordinary socket. It is not one.

The market reference is Legrand's Green'Up Access. The manufacturer's catalogue sheet rates it at 230 V and 14 A, meaning 3.2 kW, in IP66 and IK08. Hager offers an equivalent. A plain household socket, meanwhile, is deliberately held by the car's cable at around 10 A, so 2.3 kW, precisely because its wiring was never designed for eight hours of charging a day.

The 39 % figure surprises people, because packaging promises more. The Auto5 product sheet for the Legrand pack states "single-phase (3.7 to 7.4 kW)" in its specification block along with a 16 A charging current, while Legrand writes 14 A and 3.2 kW in its own catalogue. Same symptom as on Type 2 cables: the retailer's sheet contradicts the manufacturer's. Trust the amperage from the maker.

How many kilometres does one night of charging add?

Around 140 km instead of 100 km, over an eight-hour night at 16.5 kWh/100 km. The net gain is therefore about 40 km per night, enough for a Brussels commuter and not enough for a high-mileage driver.

One piece of arithmetic is worth setting out, because it simplifies everything else. A 10 to 100 % charge fills 90 % of the battery, and AC charging losses run at around 10 %. The two almost cancel out: the energy drawn at the meter for a 10 to 100 % charge comes close to the nominal battery capacity. Dividing capacity by power therefore gives the duration directly, with no spreadsheet.

Reading that table settles the question almost on its own. On a 27.5 kWh city car topped up halfway each night, the reinforced socket does the job without argument. On a Model Y brought home empty on a Friday evening, it needs the best part of a day, and the weekend goes with it.

The cable matters as much as the socket, and that is the commonest trap. The mode 2 control box supplied with the car often carries a current selector left on its cautious position, and a lead capped at 10 A will drag your brand new reinforced socket back to 2.3 kW. What does a reinforced socket cost in Belgium?

€199.95 for the pack, €155 for the inspection, and labour on top. The ready-to-install Legrand pack, reference 2389395 was listed at €199.95 including VAT at Auto5.be on 19 September 2026, with the Green'Up Access socket, its 090478 hanging bracket and a 20 A curve C 30 mA type F residual current breaker.

French pages stop there and conclude that the reinforced socket is the cheap option. In Belgium, what comes next changes the reasoning.

The €155 inspection fee is the published rate of Atlas Contrôle, a BELAC accredited body, noted on 19 September 2026. It amounts to 78 % of the price of the pack itself, which brings the entry ticket to €354.95 before the first hour of labour.

And VAT adds a line nobody works out. The reduced 6 % rate for a dwelling over ten years old applies to equipment only when the contractor supplies and fits it on a single invoice. A pack bought over the counter therefore stays at 21 %, and you leave €24.79 on the table. On a wallbox at €900 excluding tax, the same gap between 21 % and 6 % is worth €135, which closes a good part of the socket's apparent price advantage.

That leaves the essential point: the dedicated circuit and the inspection are strictly identical in both columns. The saving covers the box, and nothing else.

Is the type F breaker in the pack good enough for the RGIE?

Under one condition. Book 1 of the RGIE, Belgium's general regulation on electrical installations, reworked by the royal decree of 6 October 2025 and in force since 1 April 2026, requires a 30 mA device at the connection point whose operation remains guaranteed against a DC component of at least 6 mA, because charging electronics can inject a smooth DC fault an ordinary breaker misses.

The type F supplied in the Legrand pack meets that rule if the mode 2 cable carries the 6 mA detection of standard EN 62752. Otherwise a type B, at appreciably more cost. A certified electrician decides, cable in hand.

Reinforced socket or wallbox: how do you decide?

Four questions are enough, and the answer nearly always falls on the same side.

  1. What battery, and how much of it topped up each day? Under 45 kWh with a daily run below 60 km, the reinforced socket covers the need. Above 60 kWh or 100 km a day, it becomes a constraint.
  2. What connection at the meter? A standard Belgian 40 A single-phase supply takes 3.2 kW without blinking, but a 7.4 kW wallbox running alongside an oven and a heat pump calls for some juggling. On the Brussels 3×230 V grid without neutral, the sums change again.
  3. Do you want to steer the charge? A reinforced socket modulates nothing, meters nothing and does not follow your solar output. A smart charge point does, and that is often what justifies the price gap. Our home charge point ranking compares the models sold here.
  4. Do you rent or own? In a rental or a flat, a reinforced socket goes down more easily with a landlord or a building manager than a wall-mounted unit, because it comes off and leaves few marks.

Four mistakes come up every time:

  • Buying the pack, having a handy friend fit it and skipping the inspection. That is the costliest error of the lot, and it only shows up on the day of a claim.
  • Choosing a reinforced socket for a large battery, then finding that a weekend top-up takes all of Saturday.
  • Leaving the mode 2 cable set to 10 A, and paying for 3.2 kW while drawing 2.3.
  • Comparing the €199.95 pack with a €1,200 fitted charge point, forgetting that the dedicated circuit, the labour and the inspection land on both sides.

Five steps before you order

  1. Note your battery capacity and your real daily mileage, not the one you would like to be doing. The table above gives the matching duration.
  2. Open your mode 2 control box and check the maximum adjustable current. Without 14 or 16 A available, the reinforced socket brings nothing.
  3. Have your consumer unit looked at by a certified electrician: room for a dedicated breaker, cable cross-section to run, length of the route, state of the earthing.
  4. Ask for two quotes naming the type of residual current device chosen, with and without the equipment supplied by the contractor, so you can see the effect of the 6 % rate.
  5. Book the inspection with an accredited body as soon as you order. It governs commissioning, insurance cover and the resale of the property.

A reinforced socket is no gadget, but it is not the €200 solution French pages describe either. It costs an electrician's job plus an inspection, for a power output that stays at half that of an entry-level wallbox. It earns its place when the battery is small, the overnight need modest and the home not entirely yours.

Frequently asked questions

Does a reinforced socket really charge twice as fast?

No. Legrand rates the Green'Up Access at 3.2 kW, meaning 14 A at 230 V, against 2.3 kW for a household socket limited to 10 A. The gain is 39 %, not 100 %. On a 44 kWh Citroën ë-C3, a 10 to 100 % charge drops from 19 h 08 to 13 h 45.

Can I fit a reinforced socket myself in Belgium?

No. The connection runs on a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, with its own residual current breaker, and that extension of the installation is the job of a certified electrician. It then has to be signed off by an accredited inspection body. An installation fitted without that step exposes you to your insurer refusing to pay out after a claim.

Is the type F breaker supplied in the pack good enough?

Only under one condition. The Legrand pack contains a 20 A curve C 30 mA type F residual current breaker. The RGIE, Belgium's general regulation on electrical installations, requires a 30 mA device at the connection point whose operation remains guaranteed against a smooth DC component of at least 6 mA. A type F qualifies if your mode 2 cable carries the 6 mA detection set out in standard EN 62752, otherwise a type B is needed. Your electrician decides with the cable in hand.

Do I need a particular cable to get the full 3.2 kW?

Yes. The socket only offers the power, the mode 2 cable decides. A lead set to 8 or 10 A will keep you at 1.8 or 2.3 kW on a brand new reinforced socket. Check that the cable supplied with the car goes up to 14 or 16 A and that it recognises the Green'Up infrastructure, otherwise the control box stays on its cautious setting.

Do I have to notify the grid operator?

In principle not for a reinforced socket. Notifying the DSO, the distribution system operator, is triggered above 5 kVA of added power, a threshold a 3.2 kW socket does not cross, unlike a 7.4 or 11 kW wallbox. Check anyway with Sibelga, ORES, RESA or Fluvius depending on your municipality, since practice varies.

Does the 6 % VAT rate apply to a reinforced socket?

To the labour yes, to equipment bought at retail no. The reduced 6 % rate applies to a dwelling over ten years old when the contractor supplies and fits the equipment on a single invoice. A pack bought over the counter therefore carries its 21 %, and the €199.95 listed on 19 September 2026 leaves €24.79 on the table compared with the same equipment invoiced by the installer.

Take the reinforced socket if your battery stays under 45 kWh, if you top up less than 60 km a day and if the home is not quite yours. Budget €354.95 for the pack and the inspection before labour, and insist that the quote names the type of residual current device. Above 60 kWh of battery the question barely arises: fitting a home charge point costs more in equipment, but the dedicated circuit, the labour and the inspection are the same, and you charge 2.3 times faster.
