Last year, when I set out to replace our family car, I spent three weekends going back and forth between configurators. Tesla, Skoda, Kia, Peugeot — every brand claimed to offer the best compact SUV on the market. In practice, on the E411 on a Friday evening with the kids, promises evaporate fast. What remains are the numbers, the boot, and the charger that actually works when you arrive.
This comparison ranks six compact electric SUVs available in Belgium by what matters on the road, not in a brochure.
What is a compact electric SUV in 2026?
The compact SUV segment covers vehicles between 4.10 and 4.60 metres with raised ground clearance and a minimum 400-litre boot. It is the best-selling format in Europe — and in Belgium, it accounts for a third of electric registrations since the start of 2026 (Febiac, Q1 2026).
Compared to a compact saloon (such as the VW ID.3 or Tesla Model 3), the compact SUV offers a raised driving position, easier access to child seats and more boot volume. The trade-off: 10-15% higher consumption due to aerodynamics and weight.
What are the 6 best compact electric SUVs in Belgium?
| Model | Belgian catalogue price | Battery | WLTP range | Max DC charging | Boot | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skoda Elroq 85 | EUR 38,600 | 82 kWh | 580 km | 175 kW | 470 L | 286 hp |
| Kia EV3 Long Range | EUR 41,490 | 81.4 kWh | 605 km | 128 kW | 460 L | 204 hp |
| Volvo EX30 Twin Motor | EUR 42,550 | 69 kWh | 460 km | 153 kW | 318 L | 428 hp |
| Peugeot e-3008 Long Range | EUR 44,990 | 98 kWh | 700 km | 160 kW | 520 L | 230 hp |
| Tesla Model Y Long Range | EUR 52,990 | 79 kWh | 622 km | 250 kW | 854 L | 340 hp |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range | EUR 53,400 | 84 kWh | 570 km | 350 kW | 527 L | 325 hp |
Prices shown are official Belgian catalogue prices (May 2026). Base versions exist at lower prices — the Skoda Elroq 50 starts at EUR 33,900, the Kia EV3 at EUR 35,990 — but with smaller batteries and reduced range.
What real-world range can you expect on Belgian roads?
The WLTP figure is the manufacturer's number in mild weather on a mixed cycle. On the E411 at 120 km/h on a Friday in November, with the heater on and two kids in the back, expect 25-30% less.
Real-world figures measured on Belgian motorways at 120 km/h (source: ADAC tests and Bjørn Nyland, 2025-2026):
| Model | Real-world range summer (120 km/h) | Real-world range winter (120 km/h) |
|---|---|---|
| Peugeot e-3008 LR | ~510 km | ~410 km |
| Tesla Model Y LR | ~460 km | ~370 km |
| Kia EV3 LR | ~440 km | ~350 km |
| Skoda Elroq 85 | ~420 km | ~340 km |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 LR | ~410 km | ~330 km |
| Volvo EX30 TM | ~340 km | ~270 km |
For the Brussels–Ardennes trip (Bastogne, 180 km), all models make it without charging, even in winter. For Brussels to the Côte d'Azur (1,050 km), the Peugeot e-3008 LR requires two charging stops, the others three.

Which compact SUV for which Belgian driver profile?
The best compact electric SUV does not exist in absolute terms — it depends on your usage. Here is the recommended model by profile.
Commuter (30–80 km/day, home charging). The Skoda Elroq 85 at EUR 38,600 offers the best ratio of range, price and comfort. The interior is understated, well-finished, with a spacious rear bench. DC charging at 175 kW is sufficient for occasional longer trips. This is the rational choice.
Family with children, Ardennes weekends. The Peugeot e-3008 Long Range with its 700 km WLTP and 520-litre boot. The 98 kWh battery absorbs loaded trips without having to calculate. The i-Cockpit is divisive — you either like the compact steering wheel or you don't. Take a test drive before signing.
Self-employed or company car. The Tesla Model Y Long Range. The Supercharger network remains the most reliable for business travel, the BIK is capped at 4% and deductibility is 100%. The 854-litre boot (frunk included) swallows equipment. Charging at 250 kW keeps motorway breaks short.
Driver who wants the fastest charging. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range on 800V. From 10 to 80% in 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger — no competitor matches this in the segment. V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) lets you power an electrical device from the car: handy when camping or on a work site.
Tight budget, maximum range. The Kia EV3 Long Range. At EUR 41,490, it delivers 605 km WLTP — the best range-per-euro ratio on the market. The only drawback: DC charging peaks at 128 kW, which stretches stops to 40 minutes for 10-80%. If your long trips are rare, this is inconsequential.
Design and driving pleasure. The Volvo EX30 Twin Motor. The most compact of the group (4.23 m), the most powerful (428 hp), the most distinctive in Brussels traffic. The 318-litre boot is its main weakness — with a dog and two bags of shopping, it's tight. For a couple without children, it's the indulgent choice.
How is charging on Belgian motorways?
Belgium has 52 Ionity stations, 38 Fastned stations and 47 Tesla Superchargers (most of which have been open to all brands since 2025). On the E411, E40 and E19, a fast charger can be found every 50-80 km on average.
In practice, density is sufficient. But reliability varies. Ionity chargers report 95% uptime (Ionity Q1 2026 report). TotalEnergies and Allego chargers fluctuate between 85 and 92%. Tesla Superchargers remain above 99% uptime.
For drivers who frequently make long trips, a multi-network charging card simplifies management. Ionity Passport subscriptions (EUR 11.99/month for EUR 0.35/kWh) or Fastned Gold (EUR 11.99/month for EUR 0.45/kWh) reduce rapid charging costs.
What is the total cost of ownership of a compact electric SUV?
Over 5 years and 15,000 km/year with home charging (EUR 0.28/kWh), the TCO of a compact electric SUV sits between EUR 0.35 and 0.50/km all-in (insurance, maintenance, energy, depreciation). An equivalent diesel SUV (Peugeot 3008 HDi, Hyundai Tucson diesel) runs at EUR 0.45-0.60/km.
The electric advantage grows for company cars thanks to 100% deductibility and capped BIK. A Tesla Model Y on a long-term lease costs roughly EUR 150-200/month less in net terms than a BMW X1 diesel at a similar catalogue price. Our TCO calculator lets you work out your specific situation.
On the E411, when the Vedrin charger is down and the one at Spy reads "under maintenance", you appreciate the 510 real-world kilometres of the e-3008 — or the 47 Supercharger stations of the Model Y. Range and network reliability amount to the same peace of mind.
Verdict: which compact SUV to buy in Belgium?
If I had to pick one model across all categories, it would be the Skoda Elroq 85. At EUR 38,600, it delivers 580 km WLTP, a well-designed interior, a family-friendly 470-litre boot and the reliability of Volkswagen's MEB platform. It is the compact SUV that makes the fewest compromises for the price asked.
For those with the budget, the Tesla Model Y Long Range remains the benchmark thanks to the Supercharger network and the largest boot in the segment. And for high-mileage drivers in a hurry, the Ioniq 5 with its 800V charging in 18 minutes has no equivalent.
Le verdict de Christophe F.
The compact electric SUV segment is mature. Six models between EUR 34,000 and 54,000 cover every Belgian use case. The Elroq for reason, the e-3008 for range, the Model Y for the network, the Ioniq 5 for speed. In 2026, there is no bad choice — only different priorities.
