No, not if you drive every week. On an electric car, the traction battery tops up the small 12 V battery itself every time the car wakes. A battery maintainer only earns its place on a car that sits for a long time, and only once you have checked the actual voltage of its low-voltage battery.
Does an electric car need a battery maintainer?
In most cases, no.
An electric car carries two batteries. The big one drives the motor. The small one, 12 volts, runs the onboard computer, the lighting, the locking and the screens, exactly as on a petrol car. Between them sits a converter called the DC-DC, which moves energy from the big battery to the small one whenever the car wakes, and it needs no engine running to do so.
As long as you take the wheel once a week and the traction battery is not empty, that circuit looks after itself. Buying a maintainer then means paying thirty euros to duplicate a component that already works.
The Belgian shelf says as much in its own way. Of the twenty-three products in the "chargeur batterie" category at Auto5.be, surveyed on 7 September 2026, only two are classified as a maintainer, and no product page mentions the electric car at all, even though the same chain runs a full "recharge voiture électrique" aisle.
The 12 V battery gives up around five years, electric or not
Touring puts the end of life of these batteries at around five years and finds they fail as often on an electric car as on a combustion one, figures relayed by Moniteur Automobile. On hybrids and electric cars, the Belgian roadside service records four times as many battery breakdowns as a few years ago, while its total call-out volume rose by 25 % in two years.
Germany's ADAC reaches the same diagnosis on a far larger sample. In 2025, 45.4 % of its call-outs came down to a weak or dead onboard battery, against 35.7 % ten years earlier. The German motoring club points to a cause that belongs to electric cars specifically: every time you open the app to check the state of charge, the car wakes up and draws on the 12 V battery. The gesture looks harmless. Repeated four times a day through a month of holidays, it empties an onboard battery.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 shows the limits of the exercise. Its 2022 and 2023 model years show high breakdown rates because of the ICCU, the unit that charges the 12 V battery from the high-voltage side, and Hyundai has launched a service campaign and then an official recall. No battery maintainer fixes that fault: it keeps a battery topped up, it does not repair what was supposed to fill it.
Is your onboard battery 12 V or 16 V?
Settle this before buying anything, because the answer changed along the way.
Tesla's service manual puts the two generations side by side. A 2018 Model 3 carries a 45 Ah lead-acid low-voltage battery at 12 V. A 2022 Model 3 carries a 6.9 Ah lithium-ion unit at 16 V. Same car, same name, two different worlds. And a maintainer bought off the car-accessory shelf is a 12 V device.
Three things to check in the manual, then, before reaching for your card: the nominal voltage, the chemistry stated by the manufacturer (lead, AGM or lithium) and the connection point it specifies. On many recent models the battery hides under the boot floor or behind a wing panel, and the manufacturer routes accessible terminals elsewhere. None of this is improvised, and nothing justifies touching the orange high-voltage cabling.
Which maintainer, and what does it cost in Belgium?

Two remarks on this survey, and the second matters more than the first. Both CTEK units and several Norauto ones were listed as out of stock on the day. More to the point, the €29.95 Norauto does not claim lithium support while the NOCO and CTEK units do, and that is precisely the criterion that decides the matter on a recent car.
One amp is enough to maintain. Five amps are for bringing a battery that has already gone flat back up, which is a different job. For plain winter storage, the 1 A unit does the work and costs the least.
Set against those thirty euros, the cost of doing nothing adds up fast: at the same chain and on the same day, a car battery starts at €49 and workshop fitting at €29, so €78 at the very least.

The street-parking row deserves a word, because it applies to a great many people in Brussels. Four mistakes come round again and again, and each one costs money or a battery:
- Connecting a 12 V device to a car whose onboard battery is 16 V lithium, because the box said "fits all cars".
- Expecting a maintainer to rescue a six-year-old battery. It keeps a healthy battery healthy, it revives nothing.
- Confusing maintaining with charging, and buying a 5 A unit where 1 A was enough.
- Disconnecting the terminal to "do it properly", then spending an hour recovering lost settings.
Does a jump starter do the same job?
No. A jump starter revives a car once, a maintainer stops you needing one. Two objects, two moments.
What if the 12 V battery is already flat?
At that point the maintainer arrives too late, and what to do depends on the model. Many manufacturers provide a wake-up procedure that has the traction battery refill the 12 V one, provided the traction battery still holds energy; others require an external source connected to dedicated terminals. Your car's manual remains the only document that counts.
One detail worth knowing before you find yourself in an underground car park: with no 12 V supply, electric door handles stop responding, and the physical key hidden in the remote becomes the only way in. Worth knowing where it lives before you need it.

Can a battery maintainer stay plugged in all winter?
Yes, provided it is a regulated unit, which every smart model on sale today is. It switches to float mode once the battery is full and then delivers only what offsets self-discharge. An old linear charger with no cut-off will eventually boil the electrolyte.
Does a battery maintainer charge the traction battery?
No, never. It only talks to the 12 V battery that runs the onboard electrics. The traction battery is charged solely through the charge port, in alternating or direct current. The two circuits communicate one way only, through the onboard DC-DC converter.
My car sits at the airport for three weeks, should I plug anything in?
At an airport car park the question is moot: there is no socket. Leave the traction battery around 50 to 60 % and switch off the connected features that wake the car. The converter can then keep feeding the 12 V battery while you are away.
How do I know my 12 V battery is near the end?
Symptoms arrive before the breakdown: screens slow to light up, interior lighting fading with a door open, odd error messages on wake-up, having to use the physical key. A load test in a workshop settles it in minutes. Past five years, any doubt is worth a replacement.
