Last year, when I wanted to insure my new EV, the broker looked at me with a mix of curiosity and embarrassment. "Electric? Let me check if we have a formula for that." In Belgium, car insurance for electric vehicles isn't some exotic product — but drivers keep asking the same questions: is it more expensive, what's covered, and what about the battery?

Here's what I found after comparing six Belgian insurers and reading the fine print.

How much does electric car insurance cost in Belgium?

The average premium sits between €700 and €1,300/year, depending on the formula you choose (liability only, mini-omnium, or full comprehensive). It's not the drivetrain that sets the price — it's the vehicle's value, its power output, and your driver profile.

CoverageAnnual rangeWhat's covered
Liability (RC, mandatory)€350 – €600Third-party damage
Mini-omnium€150 – €350 (on top)Theft, fire, glass breakage, natural forces
Full omnium€400 – €700 (on top)All risks, including battery and own damage

In practice, a Renault 5 E-Tech insured with full comprehensive costs roughly the same as a Clio V petrol of comparable power. For a Tesla Model Y, the premium climbs — but so it does for a BMW X3 diesel of equivalent value.

The EV insurance surcharge isn't a myth, but it stems from the vehicle's list price, not its drivetrain. A compact electric car insures like a compact petrol car.

Is EV insurance actually more expensive than for a petrol car?

The honest answer: it depends on the model. EV repairs cost on average 30% more than equivalent petrol cars (Thatcham Research, 2024). The battery, ADAS sensors integrated into the windscreen, and aluminium body structures make the job harder for body shops.

But two factors work in EV drivers' favour:

Claims are less frequent. EV drivers statistically have fewer accidents (more cautious driver profiles, newer vehicles). Some insurers factor this into their pricing.

Eco-discounts exist. Several Belgian insurers offer specific reductions — and they're not insignificant.

What discounts do Belgian insurers offer for EVs?

Here's what I found in April 2026. These offers change regularly — check with your broker.

InsurerLiability discountOmnium discountConditions
AG (EcoBonus)-10%-10%EV or hybrid, full contract duration
P&V-30%-30%New EV, conditions apply
BNP Paribas Fortis-10%-10%EV or hybrid, permanent
KBC/CBC-15%First-year promo (check validity)

In practice, the gap between the most expensive and cheapest quote I received for the same EV was €340/year. Three quotes minimum — that's the rule.

How is the battery covered after an accident?

The battery is the most expensive part of an EV — between €4,000 and €15,000 depending on the model and capacity. A battery replacement on a Tesla Model 3 can reach €12,000; on a Dacia Spring, expect around €4,500.

Full comprehensive insurance covers the battery, like any other vehicle part. Mini-omnium, however, only covers theft, fire, and natural forces — not own damage after a collision.

One point most drivers don't know: after a collision involving the battery, the vehicle is quarantined for 48 to 72 hours. The garage isolates the car to prevent thermal runaway risk. AG covers these quarantine costs up to €3,000 through its Top Omnium. Other insurers may charge you. Read the specific terms.

Is your home charger covered by car insurance?

No. This is the most common mistake. A wall-mounted charger (wallbox) installed in your garage or on your facade is a building fixture. It falls under your home insurance, not your car insurance.

If a short circuit in the charger causes damage, your fire policy responds. If someone hits your charger while manoeuvring in the driveway, same — home insurance. Declare the installation to your home insurer and verify your policy explicitly covers charging stations.

However, if your EV catches fire due to a charger defect during charging, that's a case of manufacturer liability — your car omnium covers the vehicle damage.

How can you reduce your EV insurance cost in Belgium?

Five concrete levers:

  • Compare at least three quotes — broker, direct, and online. The difference can reach €340/year for identical coverage.
  • Increase your excess — moving from €250 to €625 excess reduces the premium by 15 to 25%. On a new EV with manufacturer warranty, the maths works out.
  • Claim the eco-discount — ask explicitly for the EV reduction. Some brokers don't offer it unprompted.
  • Bundle your contracts — liability + omnium + home insurance with the same insurer often yields 5 to 10% overall discount.
  • Road tax savings offset the cost — in Flanders, you save the annual road tax (€0 vs €200–500 for a petrol car). In Brussels, full exemption. Reinvest that saving into better coverage.

Le verdict de Christophe F.

EV insurance in Belgium isn't the financial black hole some fear. The real trap is under-insuring the battery to save €200/year — only to face a €10,000 bill after a parking bump. Take full comprehensive for the first three years, check the quarantine clause, and declare your charger to your home insurer. The rest is smart shopping between brokers.
